on transethnicity, transablism and transgenderism

  • Not only do transethnic and transabled people appropriate the cultures of PoC and disabled folks, they appropriate trans* narratives. And, as a disabled trans person of color, not only am I offended by this, I'm thoroughly creeped out by the fetishization and essentializing of my identities.

How to Listen: Respecting Marginalized Individuals

msamberhazard:

If you don’t know how to properly listen there’s a good chance that you’re not helping at all. In fact, you are probably perpetuating the conditions of domination and abuse. When a marginalized individual tells you that you are oppressing them and they need you to listen:

  1. Shut the fuck up.
  2. ACTUALLY listen! Don’t write them off and don’t wait for your turn to speak; your opinion on the matter is so unimportant and not appreciated.
  3. Don’t even fucking think about using this as a negotiation or an opportunity to coerce (IT’S NOT!).
  4. Don’t act as though this is a lot of work or inconvenient for you; you have no fucking right to complain (“it’s so hard for me to respect you… I know that being a marginalized individual is difficult and your life is completely dominated by oppression and I’ve got the long end of the stick… but I want to put the focus on me!”)
  5. DO. NOT. FUCKING. TONE. POLICE. Being a marginalized individual can be infuriating and it is beyond fucked up for you to try and invalidate those feelings or tell them you don’t like the way they express it. IT’S. NOT. ABOUT. YOU. You don’t like hearing it? Tough shit. You don’t get to tell people how to feel or express themselves.
  6. Educate yourself; it’s not my job to teach you this shit. You need to be responsible for deconstructing the oppressive and domineering tendencies in your personality.
NOTE: Everyone is different and we all have different needs. A lot of people have found this useful but you should consider your own desires and boundaries.
